Overview of the Malaysian Carbon Market

The area of carbon market has piqued my interest in the past couple of years. For this reason I have applied to join the Malaysia Carbon Market Association. On that note I am proud to be the 1st lawyer to be admitted into their rank.

Which is why it was a great pleasure for me to attend its inaugural training workshop conducted on 13th February 2026 at AICB Centre of Excellence. Hon Seng Ng started by giving a general (but very detailed) overview of how the ecosystem of carbon market works. Following that was Gs. Dr. Hamdan Omar explaining how carbon credits are generated from nature-based solutions (NBs). Nesa Albeper deRozario was illuminating on the topic on carbon credits from technology-based solutions (TBs).

Muhammad Rizal Azmi gave an overview about Bursa Carbon Exchange and its role in pioneering the trading of voluntary carbon credits in Malaysia for Verra and Gold Standard verified credits.

A roundtable talk on strategic roundtable talk on NBs moderated by Jane Koh, PhD follows suit.

It closed with MCMA's annual dinner (and also to usher in the Year of the Horse) with lots of light moments, catching up and sharing of jokes and laughter. It was a joyous occasion with great camaraderie amongst the attendees.

Huge shout out to MCMA and the members that have put so much effort in organising the workshop and the dinner. The whole event was a great success (at least in my eye) and I have learned a lot from the workshop. I hope to learn even more in the future of this particular field and the impact it will have in our country at the legal front, both commercially and environmentally.

I wish everyone a Happy Chinese New Year and may the Year of the Horse brings good fortune and luck all around.
